First Impressions of the New Skate Game (Early Access, F2P)
9/17/2025 • gaming
I’m not really a skater. I did skate a bit back in the day — just enough to move around and get from point A to point B — but I never learned tricks. And when it comes to skateboarding games, my only experience was with those old browser-based flash games on sites like Y8.
So this new free-to-play skate game in early access is actually the first real skateboarding game I’ve played. Here are my first impressions after about three hours.
Gameplay
Even as a beginner, I find it fun. The controls feel approachable, and while I’m not pulling off crazy tricks, I’m enjoying just cruising, exploring, and messing around with friends.
The vibe is definitely arcady, but what surprised me is that a lot of the animations and movements look realistic too. It strikes a nice balance: accessible for newcomers like me, but with enough depth that I imagine skilled players could get creative.
One thing that made me laugh right away: the ragdoll physics. Crashing into a rail or object sends your skater flying in ridiculous ways. It might not be realistic, but it’s hilarious every time.
Beginner Challenges
I really liked the beginner challenges. They’re basically mini tutorials disguised as missions, but they’re a nice way to get used to the controls without feeling overwhelming. For someone new to skate games like me, it was a smooth on-ramp.
Social Features
One feature that stood out right away: being able to instantly teleport to a friend when you’re in a group. It makes playing together smooth and keeps the flow going, instead of spending forever trying to find each other on the map.
There’s also a bus station fast travel system that helps you hop around quickly if you don’t want to skate across the whole city. Both systems make exploration way less of a chore.
Bugs & Early Access
There are lots of bugs — but that’s to be expected in early access.
Sometimes animations glitch, physics freak out, or the game doesn’t quite behave as you’d expect. It’s rough around the edges, but nothing that’s made me want to stop playing.
Monetization Concerns
I have to mention the loot box system. Right now, there are a lot of crates you have to open, and sometimes you even need to pay to unlock them. That has me a little worried — if the devs lean too hard into monetization, it could hurt the long-term fun. Early access is the right time to get this balance right, so I hope they don’t push too far.
Dialogue & Quests
Another small note: some of the quest dialogue feels cheesy. I don’t know if it’s intentional or just early writing, but a few lines made me cringe more than laugh. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it does stand out when everything else feels polished.
So Far
With only three hours in, I don’t want to call this a full review yet. But as a beginner skater and first-time skate game player, I can honestly say: I had fun, and I’m planning to keep playing.
Verdict (First Look)
- Fun even for non-skaters
- Arcady feel with flashes of realism
- Teleport-to-friend and bus fast travel are great touches
- Beginner challenges ease you in
- Funny ragdoll physics when you crash
- Buggy (expected in early access)
- Loot boxes could be a concern
- Quest dialogue can be cheesy
I’ll keep playing, and once I’ve spent more time with it, I’ll come back with a full review. For now, if you’re curious, it’s free-to-play — give it a shot.
